Biocarbon Partners will recruit one (1) GIS and Remote Sensing Officer for Maputo.

About the Organization:

Objective of the position:

The GIS and Remote Sensing Officer is responsible for a range of tasks to support the Carbon team which is responsible for achieving VCS and CCB verifications, pre-viability and feasibility studies, biodiversity monitoring, and database management. These tasks are related to the technical aspects of the abovementioned activities and in particular spatial data management, map making, GIS and remote sensing analysis. In addition, the GIS officer is responsible to support other staff and stakeholders on mapping related activities. The GIS officer will also be expected to train technicians and other field team members in the use of GPS devices in the field, and general spatial data management – including the collection, management and storage of data collected.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Perform Spatial Analysis (Raster and Vector Data Analysis) as instructed by the Carbon Manager;
  • Digitize, create, maintain, display, update and manage GIS databases ie Postgres/Postgis;
  • Manage, maintain and store data retrieved from UAV devices;
  • Oversee the collection of Geospatial and forest data using smartphones and computer-based databases;
  • Assist the team in the acquisition and processing of spatial data related to wildlife surveys;
  • Assist Technicians in putting BCP’s spatial data and graphic outputs on the web;
  • Standardize GIS data collection methodologies;
  • Providing Technical Support for the Spatial Monitoring and Reporting Tool (SMART) for the biodiversity and conservation Monitoring Teams;
  • Provide any GIS related support to the Forest Monitoring Team and other teams operating in the field;
  • Producing Maps as and when required;
  • Any other carbon related duties that may be assigned as necessary by the Carbon manager;
  • Supervise technicians on daily basis operations;
  • Conduct workshop to technicians and FMT members;
  • Ensure the quality of data sets and formal GIS data structure.

Other Duties:

Operations:

  • Guarantee Spatial Analysis (Raster and Vector Data Analysis) are conducted as instructed by the CM;
  • Ensure the maintenance and updates of GIS databases;
  • Oversee proper collection and analysis of Geospatial and forest data obtained from smartphones and computer-based databases;
  • Ensure the maintenance of Standardize GIS data collection protocols;
  • Ensure the proper provision of GIS technical support to the field teams and other BCP departments when required;

Human Resources:

  • Provide support to CO and provide technical advice were necessary;
  • Help the SM in identifying the capacity building gaps with the company, partners and project team;
  • Adhere to BCP policies at all the times;
  • Support capacity building of community-based governance institutions and stakeholder partners.

Finance:

  • Contribute towards development of BCP annual business plans and budgets;
  • Provide technical guidance in the execution and implementation of the AWPs and Budgets;
  • Supervise registering and report of project expenditures, commitments and balance of funds;
  • Support Project FA audits and implement recommendation of audit findings.

Reporting and Communication:

  • Support the preparation of Annual VCS/CCB monitoring reports;
  • Ensure that all meetings, general progress and results are documented and communicated to the members of the SMT and Project Advisory Committee;
  • Grant user access to appropriate files on G Drive;
  • Implement a GIS data documentation system to ensure all project document are extracted (within 10 seconds) for purposes of audits, due diligence and data quality assessments;
  • Support Country Office Management in government reporting for purpose of project compliance and project monitoring.

ALLIANCE BUILDERS WANTED:

  • Graduate degree with specialization in GIS and remote sensing;
  • Advanced skills in GIS analysis, experience with ArcGIS Pro is required, including geo-processing, raster analysis and cartography techniques. Model builder and / or Python development experience is a plus;
  • Advanced computer skills, especially Microsoft Office (MS Excel and MS Word experience is required), and Adobe products (Acrobat, Photoshop) a plus. Excel experience with VBA knowledge is a plus;
  • Ability to work under often tight deadlines, and accept frequent change in a high pressure and fast paced work environment; Strong commitment to BCP’s success and mission;
  • Good self-organization, thoroughness and attention to detail;
  • Ability to work under often tight deadlines, and accept frequent change in a highly dynamic work environment;
  • Model builder experience;
  • Strong inter‐cultural and inter‐personal communication skills;
  • Fluency in Portuguese Written and Spoken as well as Working Level of English written and spoken.
